Day 1 - Sprint Race and Training – University of West of England, Bristol
The Sprint Race area combines a university campus with an area of parkland with some steep slopes. The training event will be solely in the parkland.
Day 2 Individual Race (1) – Speech House West, Forest of Dean
Day 3 Individual Race (2) – Speech House East, Forest of Dean
The terrain for both of the individual races is mixed, mainly deciduous woodland, with some evidence of the area’s industrial history in the guise of spoil heaps, pits and depressions and charcoal burners’ platforms. The terrain is fast, but containing some areas of technical complexity.
Day 4 - JK Relays – Caerwent Army Camp, Chepstow
This area is a disused military munitions dump, primarily open rough pasture and grassland, with many buildings, roads and earthbanks. The relay will be fast and furious with good opportunities for spectator interest.
The event centre for JK 2007 will be following us around Bristol and the Forest of Dean, and our focus will be high quality orienteering combined with a relaxed sociable atmosphere where we can all enjoy this wonderful sport of ours. There will be no fixed event centre.
The nearent airports are at Bristol and Cardiff. There are also railway stations at Bristol Parkway (walking distance from the sprint race venue) and at Cardiff, Chepstow and Lydney. If there is sufficient demand, we will arrange transport from the station in Chepstow to both of the individual races and the relay.
Local Accommodation can be found via the local tourist information Centre. Telephone 01594 812388 or visit www.visitforestofdean.co.uk. Please check the JK Website for preferential deals on accommodation and camping.
There are youth hostels at St Briavels and Welsh Bicknor (in the Forest of Dean) and in the City of Bristol. Bookings can be made via the YHA website at www.yha.org.uk, or by telephone on 0870 770 8868
There will be free string and off-string courses for budding orienteers every day, with prizes for all. It will use all available technology, including electronic punching.
There will be Elite Trail O courses at both of the individual race days, with both open and paralympic classes. We also hope to stage a less formal Trail O course as part of the training, available to all to test their technical orienteering skills.
There will be limited colour coded courses available on days 2 and 3. These are open to all including non-British Orienteering members. Entry is on the day.
The map scale will be 1:5,000 for the Sprint Race on day 1. 1:10,000 or 1:15,000 scale maps will be used as normal for days 2 and 3 (the elite Middle Race on day 1 will be 1:10,000). All relay maps will be at 1:10,000. The contour interval will be 5 metres on all days.
Competitors must not enter the area of the Forest of Dean north of B4226 and west of A4151, together with the area bounded by B4226, B4234 and two minor roads to the east and south of these roads (this area includes Cannop Ponds and Russell’s Enclosure). This includes the area north of the A4136.
Elite competitors (M/W20 and M/W21E) will have a sprint race on day 1, a middle race on day 2 and a classic race on day 3. Entries for the elite classes may be restricted; those that are not ranked for UK Cup or Future Champions Cup should expect to be required to provide evidence of their eligibility to compete in the elite races. Elite teams are invited to enter the JK Open Relay Trophy (for teams of 4) and the Women’s Open Relay Trophy (for teams of 3) on day 4.
The middle race and the classic race are both World Ranking Events, and all three individual races are part of the UK Cup series of events. The Open Relay Trophy and Women’s Open Relay Trophy are UK Relay Cup races.
